A Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) is a unique 17-character code assigned to every motor vehicle when it is manufactured. Think of it as your vehicle's fingerprint — no two vehicles in operation have the same VIN.

The VIN encodes information about the vehicle including the country where it was built, the manufacturer, vehicle type, engine and body style, the model year, the assembly plant, and a unique sequential production number.

You can find your VIN on the driver’s side dashboard (visible through the windshield), on the driver’s side door jamb sticker, on your vehicle registration and insurance documents, or on the vehicle title.

VINs never include the letters I, O, or Q to avoid confusion with the numbers 1 and 0.
